Radiator Fan Not Coming On: Why Your Car Only Overheats Sitting Still

Temperature climbs at red lights and drops on the highway? The cooling fan is the first suspect. How the fan circuit works and how we find the fault.

A/C & CoolingSeptember 17, 20265 min read

There is one overheating pattern that points straight at the fan: the gauge climbs while you sit at a light on Independence Boulevard, then falls as soon as you get moving. At speed, air passes through the radiator on its own. Sitting still, the fan is the only thing moving air, and if it is not running the heat has nowhere to go.

Quick check you can do yourself

With the engine at operating temperature and the car parked, turn the A/C on full. On nearly every car, the cooling fan is commanded on whenever the A/C compressor runs. If the fan does not spin with the A/C on, you have found your problem — or at least confirmed there is one. Keep your hands clear; a fan that has been sitting can start without warning.

What is in the circuit

A fan does not just plug into the battery. Between the coolant and the fan blade there is:

  • A coolant temperature sensor that tells the engine computer how hot the coolant is
  • The engine computer, which decides when to command the fan
  • A relay or, on many newer cars, a fan control module that switches the high current
  • A fuse — often a large one, 30 to 60 amps
  • The wiring and connectors from the relay to the fan
  • The fan motor itself

Any one of them can fail. The fan motor is the part people buy first, and it is the guilty part less than half the time.

How we find it

  1. 1Command the fan on with the scan tool. If it runs, the motor, fuse, relay and wiring are good and the problem is upstream — the sensor or the computer's logic.
  2. 2If it does not run, check the fuse. A blown fan fuse often means the motor is drawing too much current because its bearings are failing, so we test the motor before fitting a new fuse.
  3. 3Test the relay by swapping it with an identical one or by bench-testing it.
  4. 4Check for power and ground at the fan connector with the fan commanded on. Corroded connectors low in the engine bay are a common finding on cars that have seen a few winters of road brine.
  5. 5Test the motor directly with a fused jumper if everything else checks out.

Do not leave it

A car that only overheats in traffic is a car that will eventually sit in a long enough line to do real damage. Charlotte gives you plenty of chances — a stall on I-77, a Saturday on the way to a Panthers game, an afternoon storm that shuts down half of Providence Road. Our post on engine overheating covers what happens when it gets that far.

The fan circuit also affects your A/C. Without the fan, the condenser cannot shed heat and the A/C blows warm at idle — which is sometimes the first symptom people notice, before the temperature gauge ever moves.

Frequently asked questions

My fan runs all the time. Is that a problem?

It can be. A fan that never shuts off usually means the computer has lost the temperature sensor signal and is running the fan as a fail-safe, or a relay has stuck closed. It will drain the battery on a car that sits, and it is telling you something is wrong.

Can this be fixed in a driveway?

Almost always. Fans, relays, sensors and connectors are all accessible without a lift on most vehicles. We do this work on site across Charlotte and Gastonia regularly.

Why did my fuse blow again after I replaced it?

Because the fuse was doing its job. A motor drawing too much current or a short in the wiring will keep blowing fuses until the cause is fixed. Do not fit a bigger fuse.
