Engine Overheating: What to Do and What Caused It

An overheating engine can go from a warning gauge to a warped head in a very short distance. The immediate response matters more than the diagnosis, so that comes first.

What to do right now

1. 1**Turn the A/C off and the heater on full.** The heater core is a small radiator, and running it pulls real heat out of the coolant. It is unpleasant in August and it works.
2. 2**Pull over safely and shut the engine off.** Continuing to drive is what turns a hose into a head gasket.
3. 3**Do not open the radiator cap or the reservoir while hot.** The system is pressurized and the coolant is well above boiling point at atmospheric pressure. Opening it produces a scalding eruption. Wait until it is fully cool.
4. 4**Look for the obvious** — steam, a puddle, a visibly split hose, a belt that is gone.
5. 5**Call for help rather than nursing it home.** A tow costs far less than an engine.

The common causes

**Low coolant.** The most frequent, and it is always a symptom — coolant does not disappear from a sealed system without a leak. Look at hoses, the radiator, the water pump weep hole, the heater core (a sweet smell inside the car or a damp passenger floor), and the reservoir.

**A failed thermostat.** Stuck closed, coolant cannot circulate to the radiator and temperature climbs fast. A cheap part with a serious consequence.

**Cooling fans not running.** The signature symptom is overheating in traffic but not on the highway, because airflow at speed does the job the fans do at idle. Causes are the fan motor, the relay, a fuse, or the temperature sensor telling the computer to switch them on.

**A failing water pump.** Impeller erosion or a failed bearing. Look for coolant at the weep hole and listen for bearing noise.

**A blocked radiator.** Externally plugged with leaves and road debris, or internally restricted by corrosion — which is what happens when coolant is never changed and its inhibitors deplete.

**A broken serpentine belt**, on engines where it drives the water pump. Total loss of circulation.

**Air in the system**, often after a coolant service that was not properly bled. An air pocket at the thermostat prevents it opening.

**A head gasket failure.** Both a cause and a consequence. Combustion gases pushed into the cooling system create pressure and air pockets. Signs are white exhaust smoke, bubbles in the reservoir, coolant loss with no external leak, or oil that looks like a milkshake.

The overheating cycle

Worth understanding because it explains why prompt action matters: overheating warps the head, which fails the head gasket, which lets combustion pressure into the coolant, which causes more overheating. Once you are in that loop, the repair gets significantly more expensive with every mile.

The South Florida load

Our cooling systems work harder than most. High ambient temperature, heavy traffic idling, and an A/C system running nearly always — which adds heat load through the condenser sitting right in front of the radiator. A cooling system that would be adequate in a mild climate can be marginal here.

Prevention

• Check coolant level regularly, when cold
• Change coolant on schedule with the correct type
• Inspect hoses for softness, bulging or cracking
• Keep the radiator and condenser fins clear of debris
• Verify the cooling fans actually run
• Address small leaks before they become failures
