A/C Not Cold: What It Usually Is and What It Usually Is Not

Air conditioning in South Florida is not a comfort feature, it is a working system that runs most of the year. It is also where a great deal of money gets wasted on the wrong repair.

A sealed system does not consume refrigerant

If a system is low, there is a leak. There is no other explanation. Refrigerant does not get used up, evaporate away or wear out.

That matters because the common response — add refrigerant, enjoy cold air for a few months, add more — is paying repeatedly for the same fault while the compressor runs low on the oil that circulates with the refrigerant. Running a compressor short of oil is what turns a leak repair into a compressor replacement.

Finding the leak

• Dye and a UV light, which shows where refrigerant and oil have escaped
• An electronic leak detector
• Nitrogen pressure testing
• Visual inspection of the usual failure points — condenser, schrader valves, hose crimps, evaporator drain area

What else makes air not cold

1. 1**A blocked cabin air filter.** The single most common cause of 'the air stopped blowing hard', and it is a ten-minute fix.
2. 2**A condenser packed with debris.** The condenser is in front of the radiator and it fills with bugs, leaves and road dirt. Cleaning it recovers real performance.
3. 3**A failed blend door actuator**, which is a mechanical fault producing air that is cold at the vents but mixed with heat.
4. 4**A failed cooling fan**, which shows as air that is cold on the highway and warm in traffic.
5. 5**A clutch or relay fault**, meaning the compressor is not engaging at all.
6. 6**An electrical fault** rather than a refrigerant one, which testing distinguishes quickly.

Maintenance that helps

Change the cabin filter on schedule, keep the condenser clear, run the system briefly even in the cooler months to keep the seals lubricated, and have it checked before summer rather than during it.
