Heater Blowing Cold Air: The Four Usual Causes

No heat on a cold Charlotte morning is rarely the heater itself. Low coolant, a thermostat, a clogged heater core or a blend door: how to tell them apart.

The first frost usually arrives in Charlotte sometime in November, and that is the week the phone rings about heaters. Almost none of those calls are about a broken heater. The heat in your car is engine heat, and when it is missing the cooling system is where we look first.

How the heater works

Hot coolant from the engine flows through a small radiator behind the dash called the heater core. The blower pushes cabin air across it, and a flap called the blend door decides how much of that air passes through the core versus around it. So no heat means one of four things: the coolant is not hot, the coolant is not reaching the core, the core is blocked, or the air is being routed around it.

Cause 1: low coolant

The heater core sits high in the system on many vehicles, so it is the first thing to run dry when the level drops. The classic sign is heat that comes and goes with the engine speed or with turns — coolant sloshing in and out of the core. Check the reservoir cold. If it is low, the question is not just topping it up but where it went. A sealed system does not lose coolant.

Cause 2: thermostat stuck open

If the engine never gets warm, the coolant never gets hot, and the heater has nothing to work with. The tell is the temperature gauge sitting low and the heat improving in slow traffic. We covered this in thermostat stuck open or closed, and it is the most common cause of poor heat we see.

Cause 3: a clogged heater core

Years of old coolant, or a stop-leak product somebody added, deposit sludge in the narrow tubes of the heater core. The engine is hot, the gauge is normal, and the vents are lukewarm. The check: with the engine warm, both heater hoses at the firewall should be hot. If one is hot and the other is cool, coolant is not making it through the core.

A partial clog can sometimes be cleared by back-flushing the core. A full clog usually means replacement, and on many vehicles that is a dash-out job — one of the few we will tell you honestly belongs in a shop.

Cause 4: a blend door that will not move

The blend door is moved by a small electric actuator. When the actuator strips its gears or fails, the door stays wherever it was. The classic symptom is a clicking noise behind the dash when you change the temperature setting, with no change in the air. Sometimes it is heat on one side of the car only. This is an electrical fault, not a coolant fault, and the diagnosis is through the scan tool and a listen behind the dash.

Less common: air in the system

After any cooling system repair, an air pocket can lodge in the heater core. The engine may run warm and the heater will be weak or intermittent. Bleeding the system properly fixes it. If your heat disappeared right after a water pump or radiator job, this is where to start.

Frequently asked questions

My heat works but the A/C does not. Related?

Different systems, though they share the blower, the ducts and the blend door. Our post on A/C not blowing cold covers that side.

Is a heater flush worth trying?

For a partial clog, yes, and it is inexpensive compared to a core replacement. For a core that is fully blocked or leaking, no.

Can you diagnose this at my house?

Yes. All four causes are diagnosed with the hood up and a scan tool, and three of the four are repaired on site. We cover Huntersville, Cornelius and the rest of Mecklenburg County.
