Why Brakes Wear Faster in South Florida Traffic

Brake life quoted in miles is close to meaningless, because brakes wear on the number of stops and the energy in each one rather than on distance travelled.

The arithmetic

A brake converts kinetic energy into heat. Two vehicles covering the same annual mileage — one commuting on I-95 at steady speed, one doing school runs and errands in Broward traffic — do a completely different amount of that conversion. The stop-and-go vehicle may make five times the number of stops.

That is why a mileage-based brake interval is wrong in one direction or the other on almost every vehicle.

What actually tells you

• **Measured pad thickness**, which is the only honest answer
• **Rotor thickness measured against the minimum stamped on the rotor**
• **Noise** — a wear indicator squeal is a designed warning; grinding means the pads are gone and the rotor is being damaged
• **Pedal feel** — a soft or long pedal is a hydraulic issue rather than a pad one and it is more urgent
• **Pulsation**, which is usually thickness variation in the rotor rather than a bent one
• **Pulling to one side**, which frequently means a sticking caliper

Heat and humidity

South Florida adds two factors. Heat means brakes get less cooling between stops in traffic, and humidity plus coastal salt corrodes hardware — slide pins seize, caliper brackets rust, and a seized pin makes one pad do the work of two, which wears it out and overheats that corner.

Cleaning and lubricating the hardware at every brake service is not optional here. It is the difference between a brake job that lasts and one that comes back.

Brake fluid

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over years and its boiling point falls as it does. Most manufacturers specify a change interval in years, and almost nobody follows it. It is inexpensive and it is the cheapest safety improvement available on an older vehicle.
